Why Cutting Speed Matters More Than Anything

Every broken tool, scrapped part, and ruined surface finish in a CNC shop starts with the wrong cutting speed. Too fast and the insert burns out in minutes. Too slow and you are wasting machine time and money every single cycle. The right cutting speed is the foundation of profitable CNC machining.

This guide gives you the complete speed and feed reference for all 10 materials in MachIQ — verified data you can use directly on your shop floor.

💡
How to Use This Chart

Find your material. Choose Rough or Finish. Use the Vc value to calculate RPM using N = (Vc × 1000) ÷ (Ï€ × D). Or open MachIQ — select the material and it does all the calculation for you in 2 seconds.

🟠 Alloy Steel (42CrMo, EN19, EN24)
OperationVc m/minFeed mm/revDOC mmNotes
Rough Turning140–2000.2–0.351.5–3.0Reduce Vc for hardened material
Finish Turning200–2600.05–0.120.3–0.8CVD coated inserts preferred
End Milling100–1600.08–0.180.8–2.5Climb milling recommended
Drilling60–1000.1–0.25Full diaPeck drilling for deep holes
⚪ Aluminium (6061, 7075, Cast Alloys)
OperationVc m/minFeed mm/revDOC mmNotes
Rough Turning400–6000.2–0.42.0–5.0Uncoated or diamond-coated insert
Finish Turning600–8000.05–0.150.3–1.0PCD insert for mirror finish
End Milling300–5000.1–0.33.0–8.03-flute carbide, high helix
Drilling200–3500.2–0.5Full diaHigh helix drill, clear chips often
🟡 Cast Iron (Grey, Nodular)
OperationVc m/minFeed mm/revDOC mmNotes
Rough Turning80–1400.3–0.52.0–5.0CBN or ceramic inserts for hard CI
Finish Turning140–2000.1–0.20.5–1.5Dry machining preferred
End Milling80–1200.1–0.251.5–4.0Dry or MQL — avoid flood coolant
🔩 Stainless Steel — SS 304 & SS 316
MaterialOperationVc m/minFeed mm/revKey Tip
SS 304Rough Turn100–1500.1–0.25Sharp insert, high feed
SS 304Finish Turn150–2000.05–0.12No dwell — causes work hardening
SS 316Rough Turn80–1300.1–0.2More sticky than 304 — lower Vc
SS 316Finish Turn120–1700.05–0.1PVD coated inserts mandatory
⚠️
Stainless Steel Warning

Never stop the tool mid-cut in stainless steel. The material work-hardens instantly on dwell, making the next cut nearly impossible and destroying the insert. Always maintain continuous feed.

🟣 Exotic Alloys — Ti-6Al-4V & Inconel 718
MaterialOperationVc m/minFeed mm/revDOC mm
Ti-6Al-4VRough Turn40–600.1–0.20.5–1.5
Ti-6Al-4VFinish Turn55–800.05–0.10.2–0.5
Inconel 718Rough Turn25–400.05–0.150.3–1.0
Inconel 718Finish Turn35–500.03–0.080.1–0.4
⚠️
Exotic Alloy Caution

Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718 generate intense heat at the cutting edge. Use only flood coolant at maximum pressure. CBN or PCD inserts for Inconel. Change inserts frequently — do not push insert life on exotic alloys.
